In Esbjerg, the Gamle Ting- og Arresthus (The Old City Hall & Jailhouse) from 1892 sets the romantic scene for your wedding. Centrally located on the Main Square in the heart of Esbjerg, ceremonies are held in the beautiful wedding room.
The Ting- og Arresthus was built in 1892, and was used for official purposes until 1983. The jail was active until 1947, when the last inmates were released. During World War II, the German Occupation used the house for their purposes, and many Danish freedom fighters were imprisoned here. The prison cells still exist in the jailhouse.
If you like, you can enjoy refreshments with your guests, in an adjoining room after the ceremony. Read more about this in the section Opportunity to enjoy a glass after the ceremony below.

Wedding on a sunny day at Ting- og Arresthuset (The Old Town Hall)
The ceremony takes place in the beautiful wedding room, which was carefully renovated in 2013 in accordance with the building’s history and style. The original furniture from the council chambers adorns the rooms along with contemporary paintings, fresh flowers and candles, altogether creating a nice and romantic ambiance. The wedding registrar makes your wedding the absolute highlight of the day, with the wedding speech and wedding ritual.
After the ceremony, it is possible to enjoy a drink in a lovely adjoining room or in the former city council chambers. If you wish, you are of course welcome to invite family and friends to come and celebrate your special day.
It is very important to us that your wedding take place in accordance with your wishes. One of our registrars will conduct the official part of the ceremony, accompanied by a wedding speech on love and marriage.
Then it will be time to exchange rings and to take wedding photos. The ceremony ends with the presentation of your marriage certificate.
If you would like to toast to the occasion and enjoy a drink after the ceremony, this can easily be accommodated. In order to ensure that the room will be available, please inquire at the Wedding Office or ask the staff when you arrive at the Ting- og Arresthus. If you know how many guests are coming, please let us know in advance. Remember: you must bring your own glasses, drinks/beverages, etc.
On some days, there are many weddings taking place, and therefore it is only possible to use the room for 10-15 minutes. Would you like the celebrations to last a little longer? VisitEsbjerg can help you find a nice place to hold your wedding reception.
